Simpson Strong-Tie Introduces Large-Diameter Stainless-Steel Screw Anchors for Wastewater Treatment Plant and Critical Bridge Repairs posted 2/28/18

Pleasanton, Calif. – Simpson Strong-Tie, the industry leader in engineered structural connectors, fasteners, anchors and building solutions, is the first manufacturer to launch large-diameter stainless-steel screw anchors for concrete and masonry. Designed for severely corrosive interior or exterior environments, the new stainless-steel Titen HD® heavy-duty screw anchors (THDSS) deliver a new standard of performance for bridge, marine and water treatment plant construction and retrofit applications.


The nation's aging wastewater treatment plant infrastructure is facing a critical turning point, with the American Society of Civil Engineers projecting $206 billion in increased costs to households and businesses if the upgrade and replacement of old treatment plants are not completed by the year 2020. In addition, according to the American Road and Transportation Builders Association's 2018 Deficient Bridge Report, 54,259 US bridges are structurally deficient. In fact, almost 9% of all bridges in the country have at least one key structural element in poor enough condition to need repair, the report finds.

Available since April 2017 in 3/8" and 1/2" diameters, THDSS is now available in larger 5/8" and 3/4" diameters suitable for heavier civil construction where corrosive elements pose a hazard to standard carbon-steel screw anchors. "There is definitely a need in the market for larger-diameter screw anchors," says Simpson Strong-Tie senior product manager Mike Steiber. "Other wedge anchor or adhesive options often have drawbacks with spacing or difficult installation, so for applications that need stainless-steel anchors, this is a first-of-its-kind solution for the market."

"Wastewater facilities are definitely one of the key markets where these larger-diameter, corrosion-resistant anchors are badly needed," Steiber says. "The retrofit opportunity is also there for bridges, because right now we're not repairing these bridges fast enough to make the problem go away."

Innovative Hinged Roof Connector from Simpson Strong-Tie Featured in New Modular Building Products Catalog posted 1/30/18

Pleasanton, Calif. – A new hinged roof connector by Simpson Strong-Tie makes it easier for modular builders to construct stick-frame roofs in the factory that will fold flat during shipping. Accompanying the launch of this new product, Simpson Strong-Tie has also released its new Connectors & Fasteners for Modular Building catalog.

The patent-pending MMHC connector features an innovative hinge that rotates easily from open position to folded. It nails in place for easy installation. This connector has been tested and load rated in multiple directions. An offset nail pattern allows for installation on both sides of the roof rafter assembly.

"We created this new hinged connector to give modular builders more choices in how they build their roofs. Now, they can create custom rooflines with stick framing that will fold flat for shipping. Simpson Strong-Tie Renews Partnership with Habitat for Humanity to Help Build More Disaster-Resilient Homes posted 1/22/18

The new Quik Drive PRODW drywall system has a lighter-weight tool body with enhanced durability and ergonomics so drywall installations can be completed more efficiently and cost-effectively.

Builder and contractor benefits of the Quik Drive PRODW drywall system include a collated-screw feed mechanism designed to provide consistent and efficient screw delivery, a self-locking depth adjustment for accurate drive depth and a fully rotatable driver adapter for fastening in hard-to-get areas. New SHH Steel Header Hanger Provides Fast and Easy Solution for Supporting Lay-In and Cold-Formed Steel Box Headers posted 1/8/18

Pleasanton, Calif. – Simpson Strong-Tie, the industry leader in engineered structural connectors and building solutions, has developed a new steel header hanger to support cold-formed steel framing box headers as well as large-flange lay-in headers used in curtain-wall construction. The new SHH steel header hanger is engineered to ease installation by reducing drywall buildup, and screw count has been minimized with extensive component assembly testing.

Common in low- and mid-rise construction of multifamily and commercial building projects, cold-formed steel framing has emerged as a reliable and durable alternative to light-frame wood construction. The SHH steel header hanger is designed to transfer gravity and lateral loads from headers to the jamb studs and to help support the header assembly during installation.

In addition, the SHH steel header hanger has contractor-friendly geometry to reduce drywall buildup with a coped gusset to avoid the bottom track header legs. Extensive testing by Simpson Strong-Tie has enabled a wide array of available hole patterns to accommodate different load levels while minimizing installation costs and reducing screw count.

"As cold-formed steel framing increases in popularity, there is an opportunity to optimize installation times and material costs by innovating new structural connector solutions," says Clifton Melcher, senior product manager for Simpson Strong-Tie. "The SHH steel header hanger is designed with features to make drywall installations faster and easier while ensuring even load distribution to the jamb studs with minimum eccentricity."

The SHH6 is manufactured in steel thicknesses of 54 mil (16 ga.) and 68 mil (14 ga.) and is intended for use with 6" (min.) box headers. The SHH3, manufactured from 68 mil (14 ga.) steel, is intended for 3 5/8" or 4" (max.) box headers and large-flange lay-in headers. Screw-hole layouts at the jamb studs accommodate flange sizes of 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/2", 3" and 3 1/2" in addition to built-up jamb configurations. All SHH steel header hangers feature a galvanized G90 finish.

Simpson Strong-Tie Launches Next Generation of Composite Strengthening Systems™ for Concrete and Masonry Structures posted 12/15/17

Pleasanton, Calif. – With the new fabric-reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) from Simpson Strong-Tie, contractors can effectively repair, protect and strengthen concrete and masonry structures for a fraction of the installed cost of traditional shotcrete repairs that use rebar. The FRCM externally bonded Composite Strengthening System™ combines high-performance sprayable mortar with a carbon-fiber grid that creates a thin structural layer without significantly increasing the structure's weight or volume.

Because of its reduced preparation and installation time, FRCM is in many cases the most economical available solution for adding flexural, axial, or shear strength to a range of structures. The lightweight, sprayable matrix is ideal for application on overhead or vertical surfaces in structures such as tunnels, mines, parking garages, silos, bridges, and other buildings with large surface areas. A single, one-inch layer provides sufficient structural strengthening without substantially constricting tight spaces or adversely affecting facility operations. Further strengthening can be obtained as necessary through the application of additional half-inch layers.

FRCM can:

  • Strengthen aging, damaged or overloaded structures
  • Be used to repair surfaces and strengthen them in a single application
  • Correct size and layout errors
  • Match the substrate's finish
  • Upgrade ratings for live loads due to changes of use or new equipment
  • Assist in seismic retrofits by adding shear strength and mitigating displacement and ductility
  • Be used on damp substrates, and in harsh environments that may expose the system to high temperatures, humidity, abrasion, and ultraviolet (UV) exposure

FRCM Components

The sprayable, fiber-reinforced cementitious matrix (CSS-CM) is available in 55 lb. (24.9 kg) bags. The accompanying carbon-fiber grid is available in two separate models to suit the needs of any project: bidirectional (BCG) and unidirectional (UCG). Each roll of carbon-fiber grid measures 77 inches (1.95 meters) wide and 164 feet (50 meters) long.

These products and components were tested together in UL Design No. N859, and achieved a four-hour fire rating when subjected to ASTM E119/UL 263 full-scale fire testing.

New Fire Wall Hanger Now Available with Skewed or Offset Top-Flange Options posted 12/14/17

Pleasanton, Calif. – To provide more options for multi-family construction builders, the new Simpson Strong-Tie® DGH fire wall hanger can now be ordered with a skewed or offset option. This hanger is part of the new DG fire wall hanger series designed for connecting floor trusses and joists to wood stud walls.

All models of the DG fire wall hanger series easily install on a two-hour wood stud fire wall (e.g., Type III construction) during framing. These top-flange hangers feature space to allow two layers of 5/8" gypsum wall board (drywall) to be slipped into place after the framing is complete. The DG/DGH/DGB fire wall hangers have been tested according to ASTM E814 and received F (flame) and T (temperature) ratings for use on one or both sides of the wall. They are listed in Intertek Design No. SST/WPCF 120-01.

"As soon as we released the new fire wall hanger series in July, we immediately turned our attention to developing these two special options. We listened to customer feedback about the strong need to offer solutions for the two most common nonstandard connections they encounter on the jobsite," said Sam Hensen, vice president and general manager for Connectors and Lateral Systems at Simpson Strong-Tie.

All models of the DGH hanger may be ordered with a skew angle of up to 45° or with the top flange offset left or right. The skew and offset options may not be combined.

New SET-3G™ High-Strength Anchoring Adhesive from Simpson Strong-Tie posted 12/5/17

Pleasanton, Calif. – Formulated to yield superior performance in threaded rod anchor and rebar dowel installations in cracked and uncracked concrete at elevated temperatures, the new SET-3G high-strength anchoring adhesive is the latest innovation in epoxy anchoring adhesives from Simpson Strong-Tie. In addition to providing exceptional bond strength, SET-3G adhesive has been proven to outperform other products on the market.

Application and Installation
The two-component, one-to-one-ratio, epoxy-based anchoring adhesive formula dispenses in a uniform gray color to match surrounding concrete surfaces, and can be easily installed in downward, horizontal, vertical and overhead orientations.

The versatile SET-3G adhesive is designed for dry or water-saturated use conditions with temperatures anywhere between -40°F (-40°C) and 176°F (80°C). The low-odor formula also offers contractors jobsite flexibility with its ability to be installed in dry, water-saturated or water-filled holes in base materials whose temperatures range from 40°F (4°C) to 100°F (38°C).

Testing Criteria
Available in three sizes, SET-3G adhesive has been thoroughly tested.

  • Tested in accordance with ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Adhesive Anchors in Concrete Elements (AC308) and ACI 355.4 for use in cracked and uncracked normal-weight and lightweight concrete.
  • Qualified for use in structures assigned to Seismic Design Categories A through F.
  • Code listed to work with the Speed Clean™ DXS dust extraction system, which complies with updated OSHA Silica Dust Compliance Regulations to save time and keep workers safe from hazardous airborne dust.
